canned taco

Time for another great Game Time Recipe.  A while ago my brother gave me some canned venison.  I had it in my Pantry for a while trying to figure out what I should make with it.  I had never eaten any venison that had been canned before so this was a first.  I decided to try and make a shredded venison taco.    I proceeded as follows.

1 jar of canned venison.

taco seasoning to taste.  For me that’s about 2 TBS

1 TBS Camp Dog Cajun seasoning,, add that to everything.

onions

sharp cheddar cheese

taco sauce

Recipe:  add a couple TBS of oil to a hot pan,  then add canned venison.  Stir a couple minutes until warm.  Proceed to add the seasoning mix and a quarter cup of water.  Stir seasoning mix in completely.  Once seasoning is mixed in and meat is warm, heat your tortillas.  Add hot meat to tortilla and then top with onions, cheese, and sauce.  These taco’s are great.  More authentic like shredded Mexican beef.

Note: If you like cooked onions instead of fresh cut, add them to oil a couple minutes before the venison.

Try this out and let me know what you think.  Send comments, make sure you subscrivbe to the right if you like my blog.  Check out http://www.teamdirtoutdoors.com for more tips, recipes, and video’s.

My Top 10 Hunting Scriptures

Ok, many people think hunting is cruel or shouldn’t be done but the bible says otherwise.  God gave us all animals for our pleasure and for food.  You should respect the animals that you hunt and enjoy them for all the reasons God gave them to us. Here are 10 of my favorite scriptures:

  1. Gen 27:3- Now therefore take, I pray thee, thy weapons, thy quiver and thy bow, and go out to the field, and take me some venison.
  2. Gen 27:7-Bring me venison, and make me savoury meat, that I may eat, and bless thee before the LORD before my death
  3. Gen 27:5-And Rebekah heard when Isaac spake to Esau his son.  And Esau went to the field to hunt for venison, and to bring it.
  4. Proverbs 12:27-The slothful man roasteth not that which he took hunting: but the substance of a diligent man is precious.
  5. Gen 9:3-Every moving thing that liveth shall be meat for you; even as the green herb have I given you all things
  6. Acts 10:10-16- and he became very hungry and would have eaten; but while they made ready, he fell into a trance and saw heaven opened and a certain vessel descending unto him, as it had been a great sheet knit at the four corners,  and let down to the earth.Wherein were all manner four-footed beasts of the earth, wild beasts, creeping things, and fowls of the air. And there came a voice to him, “Rise, Peter; kill and eat.” But Peter said, “Not so, Lord! For I have never eaten anything that is common or unclean.” And a voice spake unto him again the second time, “What God has cleansed, that call not thou common.”  This was done thrice:  And the vessel was received up again into heaven.
  7. Gen 10:9-He was a mighty hunter before the LORD: where for it is said, Even as Nimrod the mighty hunter before the LORD.
  8. Psa 124:7- Our soul is escaped as a bird out of the snare of the Fowler: the snare is broken, and we are escaped.
  9. 1Sa 26:20 Now therefore, let not my blood fall to the earth before the face of the LORD: for the king of Israel is come out to seek a flea, as when one doth hunt a partridge in the mountains.
  10. Pro 6:5 Deliver thyself as a roe from the hand [of the hunter], and as a bird from the hand of the Fowler.

I hope you got something out of this, maybe dig deeper and see what you can find.  Not only for hunting but for yourself.  There are many lessons to be learned as the bible is the inexhaustible word of life.  Just when you think you got it God will show you something else. Take care!! If you like post your thoughts or even more of your favorite scriptures.

Here are my top 10 of the many things the bible says about fishing.

  1. JOHN 21:9- As soon then as they were come to land, they saw a fire of coals there, and fish laid thereon, and bread.
  2. JOHN 21:10-Jesus saith unto them, Bring of the fish which ye have now caught.
  3. LUKE 24:42-And they gave him a piece of a broiled fish, and of an honeycomb.
  4. MARK 6:41-And when he had taken the five loaves and the two fishes, he looked up to heaven, and blessed, and brake the loaves, and gave them to his disciples to set before them, and the two fishes divided he among them all.
  5. Matt 13:47-Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a net, that was cast into the sea, and gathered of every kind.
  6. EZEK 47:10-And it shall come to pass, that the fishers shall stand upon it from En-gedi even unto EN-eglaim: they shall be a place to spread forth nets: their fish shall be according to their kinds, as the fish of the great sea, exceeding many.
  7. NUM 11:5- We remember the fish, which we did eat in egypt freely, the cucumbers, and the melons, and the leeks, and the onions, and the garlick.
  8. GEN 1:28-And God blessed them, and God said unto them: Be fruitful and multiply, and replinish the earth, and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.
  9. JOHN 21:3-Simon Peter saith unto them, I go a fishing.  They say unto him, We also go with thee.  They went forth, and entered into a ship immediately: and that night they caught nothing.
  10. MATT 4:19- And he saith unto them: Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.

Use the A.S.S. method to take more game.

This past weekend my brother-in-law picked me up for another fun-filled weekend of deer hunting on our property in Michigan.  As we were driving the 3 hour journey we had some conversations about life, family, deer management, and hunting.  One particular conversation stood out in my mind and as a result it may make some of you better at taking game in the future.  I was talking to Aaron about how some people I know can shoot fly’s off targets at 40 yards and farther but when that animal gets in front of them SWING AND A MISS…. over and over again it happens.  I used to do it repeatedly when I was younger until I got a pre-shoot routine down.  I was telling Aaron how I look at the animal I am going to take.  I pull back, think in my head pull the pin to the spot, let half a breath out and hold it, then squeeze the trigger.  immediately he said “I USE THE ASS METHOD”  I looked at him kinda funny and replied what is that.  Well this is what it is and I believe it can work for some of you.

A.S.S. METHOD

1.  Anchor your bow-string

2. Sight in on the animal

3. Squeeze the trigger

If you have a pre-shot routine in your head you are less likely to miss the shot.  You concentrate on what you’re doing properly and not what the deer is doing, or how large the antlers are, or whatever goes through the guy with Buck Fever’s head.  So next time your out, think A.S.S. and bring home that big buck.

Thank you Aaron for the great tip.

Shots in the distance

November 15 in Michigan is a day everyone know, even non hunters.  400,000 gun hunters head out to the woods.  This is a thought I had As I sat quietly 20 feet closer to God.  It was just getting light as legal shooting time approached.  Right at legal light a shot was fired in the distance, then another, then another.  I sat in my stand watching 2 deer under me.  As they walked through the woods unsuspectingly more shots rang out around the area just none were mine.  As the deer left my area a though came to my mind.  Who were those people shooting, what were they shooting at?, a buck of a lifetime, a spike, a doe, did the shot run true, did they miss.  Was it the person reading this right now.  I don’t know, but what I do know is as I’ve wrote before it’s all about the experience whether it’s me and my family enjoying a harvest or whether it’s you and your family.  A couple years ago, I was up north sitting in my blind when a shot close to me rang out..  The shot came from the property directly behind us, just after the shot a loud whoooooooooooooo  whoooooooooooooooo rang out through the woods.  I knew at that point that one lucky hunter just shot a huge whitetail buck.  I invisioned all the large bucks on trail camera wondering which one it was.  A lot of people would be mad they didn’t get the big buck, I just thought of the experience he must be having and relived some of my past experiences and encounters with bucks.  Although I didn’t harvest a buck those days, they were great days to be in the woods.  Make sure you teach your children to hunt and to learn there weapons inside and out.  They will have the best experiences of there lives in the woods.  Keep shooting, hopefully your shots are the ones I hear.  Congratulations to all who harvested there animals this year, if you did not harvest maybe you can relive your experiences and find it wasen’t such a bad year after all.  I will leave you with this saying I once seen..  Kids that hunt and fish don’t mug old ladies.

I received this knife for Christmas last year. I am a avid hunter and wanted the knife because I watch all the survivor shows on tv. I love Bear Grylls show and also if you have checked out his website at all he does alot of cool things to help out around the world. http://www.beargrylls.com check it out. Back to the knife. The blade I found is made of good steel, it has not chipped or dulled on me the whole year. I have used it to cut trees in half, gut multiple deer, start a fire with ease, hammer stuff with it. You get the picture. When I gutted the deer the handle feels very comfortable in your hand, it opened the deer up with ease cutting through the ribs all the way to the neck in one swipe. I split the pelvic bone with ease and have used it to hack at bone with no blade dullness or chipping. I have had other knives that the tips have broken off, blades chip, they dull after gutting one deer. This knife is still going strong. The serrated edge works great, there is a whistle on the handle for situation where you might get lost. The sheath had the ferral rod in it, a sharpening stone on the back, and also a survival pamplet to help if you need it. My brother once laughed at me, cause you know, it’s a gimmick thing. I tell you the gimmick is for real, it has been a great knife for various situations and I would buy this Gerber BG knive series again. I hope you all Like this product review, This is not a paid review.

Ruttin’ Review: G5 Mag Loc 5 Arrow Quiver

Posted in 6or7, antlers, archery, bear, deer, experience, fishing, fleece, g5, g5 quiver, guns, Hunting, outdoors, recipe, reviews, scent-lok, sheds, sportsman, team dirt, typical, Uncategorized, vertigo with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on October 9, 2012 by THENONTYPICALSPORTSMAN

Well to start with here is a little about this great product:

  • Top riser-mounted quiver
  • Multiple-hole sight-mount bracket for vertical adjustment
  • Secures using a Super Magnet that allows quick and silent attaching/detaching
  • 1-piece design
  • Lightweight magnesium stem
  • Rubber over-molded hood
  • Accommodates fixed or expandable broadheads
  • Right/Left-Hand design

Ok well I have a good reason to do a review on a quiver.  The last two years I have broken both quivers I had while on my bow.  The first one I actually tripped and landed riser down on the ground and my quiver broke in half.  I can’t really say it was the quivers fault but hey.  The second I was lowering my bow down from the treestand the arrows hit the ground first, string was too long lol, but the top of the quiver broke right off.  So as I dreamed of a new quiver I still used the old one with no holder for the heads, it worked but was not visually appealing nor very safe.  Guess what, I got a new one for xmas.  The G5 Mag loc 5 arrow quiver.  I got to install it on my bow for the last week and a half of the season.  The quiver is very easy to install, took me 2 min and it looked great on my G5 Primal bow.  The metal construction was great, and I’m pretty sure it’s not going to break any time soon.  The dampeners are great for on the bow shooting.  The magnet attachment system is soooooo quiet not like those other plastic setups.  The price is mid level for quivers which is good in my opinion.  The other features are it can be used with fixed blades or expandables, can hold any arrow size including full metal jackets, and it comes in many camo patterns.   I used it on my last five hunts and loved it.  You can also get the magnet tree bracket for easy treestand use which I find very helpful in those mainstay stands.  Overall I cannot say anything bad about this setup, its quiet, cost-effective, more than functional in every situation you find yourself in.  I highly recommend you go out and get one today, you wont regret it.

A Birthday Buck To Remember.

It’s another chilly November 10th morning 15 feet up in my tree stand.  You might say whats so special about the 10th of november?   Well 2 things.  1 it’s my birthday, and 2, 9 times out of 10 it’s during the rut.  As I sat in my tree stand as a fairly new archer.  I can remember it like it was yesterday.  There was no action, no deer, just a few squirrels and birds around. Well you might say whats so special about that.  Well at this time in my life our family did not really celebrate birthdays, I had not gotten a present in years.  Prior to that I had always received presents so it had been kinda a big change for a kid.  I’m not saying that presents have to be given or that I was lacking as a child I was definitely not.  It was just a change.  So enough of that and back to the story.  As I sat there in one of my favorite places, a tree stand with my bow.  I started to pray as I do 99% of the time even to this day.  The tree stand is like my closet as it says in the bible, its dark, usually pin drop quiet, it’s a great place for prayer.  My prayer that day was (I pray to you heavenly Father on this great morning that you have given us, I thank you for letting me out in this great creation of yours, enjoying everything you have made.  Father I ask you today to bring me a buck for my birthday, I have not received anything for my birthday in the last years and this is all I ask for today.  In Jesus name AMEN. )  I then opened my eyes and scanned the woods for ever so slight movement.  Nothing….. So I continued to scan for the next ten minutes or so until out of the corner of my left eye I caught a deer walking.  I looked closer and it was coming from about 100 yards out walking to my stand.  The deer approached closer and closer and at about 60 yards I could see a small rack on its head.  A six point, I was soooo excited and began to shiver a little.  The buck continued to approach my bait.  I grabbed my bow as the deer turned right on the trail coming to the bait.  I drew back my bow and tried to remember all the lessons my dad had tought me.  Again and again draw smooth, pull the pin to behind the shoulder, take a breath and let 1/2 out and hold.  release……  My release was true and I had arrowed the basket rack six point a little back but still a kill shot.  I began to shake tremendously and immediately after began to thank God for such a great buck.  I walked back to the cabin and got my dad and uncle to find the deer.  We tracked the deer in the snow for a while,  at one point I was praying again to find the deer.  Then it appeared a nice blood trail up the hill, a small 6 point laying in a hole.  I was so happy as my dad congratulated me and as I said to my uncle ” I think you should gut it for me since its my birthday”  I didn’t have to gut just drag.  I was sooo happy that day and was to this date one of the best birthdays I can remember.  The only one that strikes me more was when my dad gave me his 7mm rifle out of the blue on my birthday.  So for all you out there that enjoyed this story. Remember that it does not have to be a 23 point non-typical to become the best memories of your life. Also, I suggest that you try prayer in the stand it will change your life trust me….
