It’s another chilly November 10th morning 15 feet up in my tree stand.  You might say whats so special about the 10th of november?   Well 2 things.  1 it’s my birthday, and 2, 9 times out of 10 it’s during the rut.  As I sat in my tree stand as a fairly new archer.  I can remember it like it was yesterday.  There was no action, no deer, just a few squirrels and birds around. Well you might say whats so special about that.  Well at this time in my life our family did not really celebrate birthdays, I had not gotten a present in years.  Prior to that I had always received presents so it had been kinda a big change for a kid.  I’m not saying that presents have to be given or that I was lacking as a child I was definitely not.  It was just a change.  So enough of that and back to the story.  As I sat there in one of my favorite places, a tree stand with my bow.  I started to pray as I do 99% of the time even to this day.  The tree stand is like my closet as it says in the bible, its dark, usually pin drop quiet, it’s a great place for prayer.  My prayer that day was (I pray to you heavenly Father on this great morning that you have given us, I thank you for letting me out in this great creation of yours, enjoying everything you have made.  Father I ask you today to bring me a buck for my birthday, I have not received anything for my birthday in the last years and this is all I ask for today.  In Jesus name AMEN. )  I then opened my eyes and scanned the woods for ever so slight movement.  Nothing….. So I continued to scan for the next ten minutes or so until out of the corner of my left eye I caught a deer walking.  I looked closer and it was coming from about 100 yards out walking to my stand.  The deer approached closer and closer and at about 60 yards I could see a small rack on its head.  A six point, I was soooo excited and began to shiver a little.  The buck continued to approach my bait.  I grabbed my bow as the deer turned right on the trail coming to the bait.  I drew back my bow and tried to remember all the lessons my dad had tought me.  Again and again draw smooth, pull the pin to behind the shoulder, take a breath and let 1/2 out and hold.  release……  My release was true and I had arrowed the basket rack six point a little back but still a kill shot.  I began to shake tremendously and immediately after began to thank God for such a great buck.  I walked back to the cabin and got my dad and uncle to find the deer.  We tracked the deer in the snow for a while,  at one point I was praying again to find the deer.  Then it appeared a nice blood trail up the hill, a small 6 point laying in a hole.  I was so happy as my dad congratulated me and as I said to my uncle ” I think you should gut it for me since its my birthday”  I didn’t have to gut just drag.  I was sooo happy that day and was to this date one of the best birthdays I can remember.  The only one that strikes me more was when my dad gave me his 7mm rifle out of the blue on my birthday.  So for all you out there that enjoyed this story. Remember that it does not have to be a 23 point non-typical to become the best memories of your life. Also, I suggest that you try prayer in the stand it will change your life trust me….

This past June, me and my family headed north to our little cabin to embark on a deer blind building project.  We spent the weekend working hard on the blind that is now called the TAJ.  The reason is we already have a Hilton.  So anyway, as we spent the weekend working hard, building the blind and our relationships I spotted my brothers hat.  This hat was camo and just above the bill it said Be Still…..  I told him I love your hat, did i ever tell you the story about that?  He said no.  I told my brother remind me later and I will so here it is later and here is the story.   It was a perfect November morning, not too cold, not too hot.  I sat perched 16 feet closer to God once again.  I sat in my stand in the dark praying for a great hunt, praying for my family, praying for protection, ectt….  The sun started to peek and a few squirrels scampered about, Even a few Turkeys came out of roost and walked by.  This morning was different than others, Why? Well because most other mornings I would have seen up to 20 deer by now.  This morning none.  As usual I was still praying, but for some reason I was I guess you would say testing God too much.  I would say prayers about having authority over the animals, prayers that God is no respector of persons and if he brought forth deer for you know so and so he should do it for my.  I was commanding deer to come to me.  Maybe this sounds weird to some but I guess I am testing my Faith as well.  After all this prayer and nothing still no deer.  It was getting later in the morning and I was ready to pack it up but I started praying again harder, testing more and more, when I heard clear as day!!! I mean clear as day!!!!! Be still and know that I am God!!!!!!!!  I instantly shut up, Not even 1 minute later here comes several deer to my right and a couple nice bucks with them.  I watched these beautiful bucks and does walk right in front of me at about 60 yards.  The deer then went out of sight..  Although I didnt’t arrow one of these giant bucks this morning, I really learned alot about God, myself, and prayer.  So I encourage you all to definatly use that time in the stand especially in the dark early in the morning when it’s dead quiet and probably the best time to hear God.  Be still, Pray, and always know he is GOD!!!!!!!!  your wildest dreams may come true.

Ruttin’ Review: The Silent Retriever

The Silent Retriever… What a good concept. I don’t know how many times I have been up in my tree stand and well, you all know what happens next. There goes your warm gloves, your quiver, or even your bow. Now its prime time hunting and something you need is now on the ground. I’m pretty sure most of you have had this happen more than once, I’m here to tell you there is now a solution to this problem. It’s called The Silent Retriever. This new product looks kinda like a fishing lure with a 25 ft multi purpose cord. The way it works is you lower it down quickly and quietly and it hooks to your item to pull it up. When I received The Silent Retriever I could not wait to give it a try. I went out back and placed a few items on the ground. A bow, Pair of gloves, hat, arrow, and binoculars. I hooked the retriever to the multipurpose rope and dropped it down. Quickly I brought up all the items and it only took 30 seconds. I was pleased at how quickly and efficiently it picked everything up. I highly recommend this product to everyone’s backpacks this upcoming season. I haven’t got a chance to try it out but I was thinking if i was ever lost and needed to catch fish this also might be a good item for other survival situations. I know that’s off topic but was just a thought. Go to http://www.thesilentretriever.com to check it out and pick one up for your upcoming season. You won’t be disappointed.

TOP DOE DECOY HUNTING RULES!!!!!!!

So I am sitting at home when RING RING, my brother calls.  Hey bro would you like to come out and video for me and hunt this afternoon.  As a good brother would I accepted the offer.  My brother wanted me to bring my Conquest VS1 scent and some Buck Fever RUT along with my Doe Decoy silhouette(Montana).  I said sure thing and started packing up my stuff.  We arrive at his hunting property he recently acquired this season, he has seen a few big bucks and his partner in crime Josh had recently shot a smaller buck on a drive of the area out front.  So with excitement we head out to the woods to set up.  When we get to our spot my brother Brad starts setting up the ground blind as i go out about 40-50 yards to set up the Montana decoy between two thickets.  I get her setup, the scent lines put out and head back to the blind.  We finish setting up and settle in for little did we know an even more exciting hunt.  As I sit there in the blind looking around about 1 hour after setup, I spot an orange hat about 80 yards out.  I turn to Brad and say hey there is some orange, quickly I realized that the hunter was probably going to shoot my decoy.  Brad leans over to see the hunter and BANGGGGGGGGGGGGG I see muzzle flash, and the tree splinters fly and leaves moving on the ground about 10 yards to the right of our blind.  I quickly grab my orange hat and start waving it out the window.  The other hunter see’s the hat, realizes what he has just done, and turns around and walks We get out of the blind and he is gone.  Well to make a long story short my brother call Josh who is the local police officer as well, and they both go have a talk with the trespassing hunter.  So based on that fun story here is my top DOE DECOY HUNTING RULES!!!!!

1. When hunting deer decoys make sure you hit them so you do not feel like even more of an idiot after the shot.

2. When hunting deer decoys make sure you find out if anyone is hurt before walking away ashamed.

3. When hunting deer decoys make sure there are no huge blinds around.

4. When hunting deer decoys make sure there are no orange hats, vests, gloves, suites, ect in the woods around it.

5. When hunting deer decoys make sure your not trespassing.

6. When hunting deer decoys make sure the decoy has no legs.

7. When hunting deer decoys make sure you have a bag with you to fold it up and pack away to take home after killing.

8. When hunting deer decoys make sure you have cash on you to buy from actual owner after killing it.

9. When hunting deer decoys make sure it doesn’t move, walk, run, tail flicker, eat, turn head, before shooting it.

10. When hunting deer decoys make sure you have a lot of tenderizor cause that is going to be tough to swallow.

Oh ya just so you know this is not the first time have experienced this.  A few years back me and Ronnie (Team Dirt Member) were on a local goose hunt when another hunter crawled through the reeds, popped up, and shot a number of our goose decoys sitting on the water.  Then realizing our decoys were not dead just sinking with all the shot in them, crawled away without saying a word.. We did catch up with him as well and it all worked out, but just be careful cause you never know when you will encounter a Decoy Hunter!!!
